When the project was completed, the 6,000 sq. ft. building housed two lofts upstairs, a studio, art gallery, and an unique coffeehouse, unlike any local gathering place in Ellijay. That is how the Ellijay Coffeehouse was born.
Meet Rick and JoAnn
the When Rick and JoAnn are away from the hustle and bustle of the Coffeehouse, they can be found hanging out on their 18 acre Farm. There, Rick brews beer and continues to create awe-inspiring art through his photography. Of course, he is also the glue that fuses their worlds together. He can be seen doing any number of handyman projects around the farm and coffeehouse, all while still leaving time for voyaging throughout the known world with camera in hand looking for the next great shot!
JoAnn is a lifelong serial entrepreneur her history has revolved around being an artist, designer, gardener, merchandiser, and small business consultant. Truly, a Rennisance (Wo)Man. She has created numerous start-ups and spends any spare second manifesting extraordinary thoughts. She reminds us that life is a journey of constant creation. A moment not lived with intention is a moment lost. Her mantra is to believe in the unbelievable.
As a dynamic duo, Rick and JoAnn weave together fellowship wherever the world may lead them. Where they go, community happens And, yes, they throw a darn good dinner party! In their down time, they escape to nature and seek any thrill the mountains has to offer, whether it be hiking, kayaking, or wandering. With them, there is always a ‘what next’, because that is what feeds their souls. They intend to leave no stone unturned.

The Martyn House
In 2007, Rick and JoAnn moved to Ellijay and bought an 18-acre, 1930’s homestead, just two miles from historic downtown Ellijay. The plan for this beautiful and remote sanctuary, surrounded by lush nature and saturated with eclectic charm, was to create a transformative experience. They wanted to design a unique Bed & Breakfast experience where their guests could connect with the earth and all of its natural food sources through farm-to-table dinners and lodging that had environmentally conscious amenities. This vision also included putting a spotlight on the vibrant local art community by including artist studio tours and retreats. The Bed & Breakfast became known as The Martyn House and quickly became Rick and JoAnn’s passion; a physical manifestation of their ever-evolving creative energy. Guests stayed in luxury sleeping tents imported from India. These tents provided a glamorous camping experience, where guests slept in real beds with fine linens and enjoyed gourmet meals. Today it is known as… Glamping. The property soon offered rooms in the Farmhouse, two Artist Studios, and four luxury sleeping tents as part of the Bed and Breakfast, often the entire property was reserved.
Featured in Southern Living in 2010 and voted 1 of 88 best getaways in the US in 2012 The Martyn House was well on it’s way to being a great success! Like most serial entreprenurs, the urge to create struck again, so The Martyn House became Rick and JoAnn’s private homestead, where Rick’s photography Studio resides and a place where JoAnn could continue to create BIG ideas!
In 2012, one of those Big Ideas emerged when Rick and JoAnn made another bold move and purchased a 1940’s building in historic downtown Ellijay. They spent a year renovating the property, re-purposing old wood to provide a warm and rustic nostalgic feeling. When the project was completed, the 6,000 sq. ft. building housed two lofts upstairs, a studio, an art gallery, and an unique coffeehouse unlike any local gathering spot in Ellijay. This is how your local living room, the Ellijay Coffeehouse, was born.
